If you are new to photography and found yourself indulging for hours into searching for wedding and wedding photographs and ideas, you might be asking yourself these:
- Can I do this?
- Will I be able to compete? I don’t have any background education in photography.
These are common questions beginners will come up with. It definitely is important and even great that you question yourself before blindly jumping in to accept offers.
But here’s the thing: formal education does not affect creativity. They are simply places to help you expand your ideas and to give insight on techniques that other professional photography comes up with.
Here’s to what really matters for a wedding photography.
The process of learning does not stop the moment you step out of the class. You need to constantly explore yourself methods that work with you. Rules? Don’t let them restrain you, but rather, let distortions and blurs become part of your art.
Photography is not always about capturing clear, sharp images. It probably was the issue in the 1900s, but today, photography is a form of art. Anyone can capture crystal clear images with high-quality gears, but only creative photographers can produce art. Not only that, those that strive to improve themselves will always be able to capture beautiful images in any condition. Equipment matters, even though they are not of the latest model.
Constantly explore new things and perceptions outside wedding. This will help you to come up with new ideas and poses for taking wedding pictures. Refrain from using the same technique that you used 5 years ago over and over again.
Be an overachiever
You think you can’t because you’re just a passionate photographer geared with only your camera and love of photography? Duncan Mein Photography is a living proof that nothing is impossible. He’s one of those Bristol wedding photographers who found his passions after earning a degree in IT!
With zero education background, he started his business. He let his creativity and knowledge of technicality play with how he produces his images. No photography rules prevented him from being featured on websites and becoming a member of the SWPP.
It was not educational background, but his love of photography. That love pushes his creativity and resulted in amazing pictures.
Education is not useless
In case that you get the wrong idea that photography education is worthless, that is not what we mean. Education is a big help. It is a place where experts compile what they know to help students. The rules come up for a reason and it is good to know what those reasons are.
For example, you should use fast shutter during a wedding ceremony to be able to instantly snap pictures. But this rule only applies to instant moments and the fast shutter is to prevent blurring or ghosting of your subjects.
Education is also good in that you get to know the history and development of photography. It is a trend to track back the olden way of capturing images. Example, vintage was not realized until digital photography begins to capture real colors. Yellow sepia and rusted photograph create an essence of timelessness and longing.
Like many other Bristol wedding photographers, do not let formal education a reason that you are not confident. Believe in your creativity!
